In unit 4 we did sculpting. There many different methods or techniques with sculpting. Some are score and slip, relief, and pinch pot. For the sculpting project I decided to do a linoleum cut. A linoleum cut is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum (sometimes mounted on a wooden block) is used for the relief surface. Now I know that this whole linoleum cut thing doesn't sound like sculpting, but when you think about it linoleum cut have to do with relief sculpting. Relief is a sculptural technique. To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. So pretty much your taking away or carving into the linoleum block to create a design of your desire.
Now I'm going to be tell you how to make linoleum cuts.
First what you do is drew a rough sketch on a piece of paper, then drew the design onto the linoleum block . Once your done you plan out what layer to want to take off first. When your done with that you carving away that layer (make sure that you carve away from you, so you won't prick yourself). When your done with that you apply a coat of ink (very little) on your linoleum block. Next what you do is put a piece of paper on top of the linoleum block the create the print. Make sure to do multiple prints to see which one is better.
